Cabin Exterior Staining

The procedure below is what is currently used for surface preparation and applying stain to the cabin exterior. 

  1. Use leaf blower to remove any dust or cobwebs from the surfaces to be sanded.
  2. Remove old stain using 80 grit sandpaper. Stain in corners that cannot be reached using orbital sander can be removed using scrapers.
  3. Remove remaining dust/powder produced from sanding by using leaf blower. If you feel there is still any dust, use a clean, dry cloth/rag to remove.
  4. Thoroughly stir stain before each use.
  5. Apply Cetol 1 (*now called “SICO ProLuxe, 1 Primary Coat Re Wood Finish”) as you now have bare wood. (Note:  You do not have to remove every speck of stain; however, the more you remove, the nicer the finished job. Also Note: the can indicates that product should not be applied in direct sunlight. We have never heeded that as it is pretty much impossible to do.)
  6. Allow sufficient drying time. (We usually leave it overnight before applying a second coat.)
  7. Sand surface lightly with 120 grit sandpaper, just to “lightly roughen it up.”
  8. Remove dust/powder using leaf blower or cloth.
  9. Apply Cetol 23. (second coat, now called *”SICO ProLuxe, 23 Top Coat Re Wood Finish”).
  10. Ideally, apply a second coat of Cetol 23 later (third coat in the process, now called *”SICO ProLuxe, 23 Top Coat Re Wood Finish”), lightly roughing the surface up between coats using 120 grit sandpaper.
  11. The manufacturer’s data recommends using mineral spirits to clean the tools since the stain is solvent-based. We didn’t clean the brushes between coats; rather, wrapped them in plastic wrap to prevent drying.

* PLEASE NOTE: The original name for the stain which was used on the cabin exterior was called “CETOL”. This product has since been renamed as “SICO ProLuxe”. It is the same product, just a new name. There are two parts to the product: a base coat and top coats.
The first part is called, “1 Primary Coat Re Wood Finish,” (formerly called “Cetol 1”). The second part is called, “23 Top Coat Re Wood Finish,” (formerly called “Cetol 23”).
